Sevilla Knocked out of UEFA Cup

Sevilla will not win their third UEFA Cup title in four years as they were eliminated by Sampdoria on Thursday. Sampdoria got a 1-0 win over Sevilla and advanced to the knockout round with Tottenham, Stuttgart, NEC Nijmegen, Paris Saint-Germain and Olympiakos. Jonathan Bottinelli scored in the 75th minute to give Sampdoria the win. Sevilla was knocked out because Stuttgart defeated Standard Liege 3-0. Standard Liege had already advanced from Group C as the top team. Sami Khedira scored early while Roberto Hilbert and Ciprian Marica scored in the second half for Stuttgart.

In Group A, Racing Santander was knocked out on goal difference as Manchester City, who had already qualified scored late in a 3-1 loss. PSG qualified as the third place team in the group after routing FC Twente 4-0.
Peguy Luyindula and Stephane Sessegnon scored in the first half while Luyindula and Mateja Kezman scored after the break for PSG.

Tottenham was down 2-0 to Spartak Moscow but came back to get a 2-2 draw and advance. Artem Dzjuba had scored two goals to give Spartak the lead but Luka Modric scored in the 67th minute for the Spurs and Tom Huddlestone tied it seven minutes later.

NEC Nijmegen scored two late goals to advance as they defeated Group D winner Udinese by a score of 2-0. Collins John scored in the 75th minute and Jhonny van Beukering added another three minutes later for NEC.

Olympiakos routed Hertha Berlin 4-0 to advance from Group B. Metalist Kharkiv won the group ahead of Galatasaray as they defeated Benfica 1-0.

A total of 24 teams advanced from the group stage and they will be joined by the eight third place finishers in the Soccer Betting Champions League group stage. The 24 teams advancing are Manchester City, FC Twente, Paris SDG, FC Metalist Kharkiv, Galatasaray, Olympiakos, Standard Liege, Stuttgart, Sampdoria, Udinese, Tottenham, NEC Nijmegen, VFL Wolfsburg, AC Milan, Braga, Hamburger SV, Ajax, Aston Villa, St. Etienne, Valencia, FC Copenhagen, CSKA Moscow, Deportivo La Coruna and Lech Poznan.

The eight sides that finished in third place in their respective Champions League groups are FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Werder Bremen, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Olympique de Marseille, Aalborg BK, ACF Fiorentina, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

The draw for the UEFA Cup Round of 32 will take place at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday and will be followed by the draw for the Round of 16.
